Professional Counselling and Psychotherapy Courses in Ireland
If you are considering a career as a counsellor or psychotherapist there are many different types of courses you can consider doing. Courses range from Counselling and Psychotherapy at certificate level all the way through to courses in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy at Masters level. With the imminent arrival of statutory registration for Counsellors and Psychotherapists choosing a properly accredited counselling or psychotherapy course it is essential if one wants to practice in the future as a counsellor or psychotherapist.
What do the Professional Bodies say about Counselling and Psychotherapy Courses?
In 2008 the professional bodies through the PTF made a submission to government in which they advanced the concept of counselling being at honours degree level 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications and psychotherapy being at level 9 on the NFQ or masters level. The Minister for Health has now stated that “QQI qualifications will be the minimum qualifications required of counsellors and psychotherapists to register under the Health and Social Care Professionals Act” when statutory registration come into being. The following are list of the current QQI accredited Masters and degree counselling courses running in Ireland in alphabetical order.
