Things never have a way of working out in life as to how we thought it would. Life throws many obstacles in our path, which can be very challenging. These can cause us to question ourself, our lives and our beliefs. These can create anxiety or depression, feelings of not being able to cope. It can leave us feeling broke and feeling that there is no way forward. We loose someone we love or a relationship or job, which can lead us to grieving for what we have lost. Sometimes we just need to find the right direction for our life. I am trained to listen sympathetically and can help you deal with any negative thoughts and feelings. I am skilled at helping you express your worries and concerns I will provide a safe space so that you can hear yourself think out loud about your life, express how you’re really feeling and discuss concerns and worries without being judged. I provide a non-judgemental space to allow you to face your challenges and support you on that journey. I have faced a lot of challenging life experiences and I feel that this has helped me to become the person that I am today. Which has allowed me to have the experience to help you with your life experiences.

Exploring with the client ways of witnessing the change that life can bring and working with these changes, towards developing a new and integrated approach to life

Kathleen O'Donohue-Gooding

Ma (1st Class Hons) Counselling/Psychotherapy

My approach is Person-Centered and Integrative. Together we will explore your thoughts and feelings, build an understanding of your particular needs and decide what approaches may best meet those needs. For example, some clients may simply need the safety, time and space to tell their story, work through their feelings of loss, sadness grief, anger, disappointment, confusion etc, discover their own solutions and feel respected and heard for who they are. Others perhaps might like to use some CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) techniques – which enable them to challenge old beliefs & negative thoughts and learn, adopt and practice new behaviours. Others again might prefer the Biodynamic approach which tends to be more holistic and adopts a mind /body approach; aspects of Gestalt, Transactional analysis

My main approach in therapy sessions is to use Cognitive Behavioural Therepy. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, also known as CBT, is a therapy which focuses on how emotions, thoughts and behaviours influence each other in our daily lives. The main element of CBT is setting goals as this helps the person to focus their thoughts, emotions and behaviours on the issue that is bothering them in the moment. CBT also encourages people to look at their lives in the present moment, while occasionally delving back to their past. Even though CBT is known as a structured therapy, it is important for the individual to steer their own journey, whilst I accompany them therapeutically.

I implement effective psychotherapy methods to instil self-understanding among clients and encourage them to adopt new attitudes and feelings towards life situations. It is essential to keep in mind that therapy is not a magic pill or a quick fix: therapy is a healing process that necessitates participation and investment from the client and counsellor alike. But in the end, making small changes to self-defeating behaviour and coping with feelings of sadness, fear, and pain can bring life-altering. I worked with a diverse range of clients. Moreover, I have previously work in Mountjoy Prison, where I supported inmates and provided a non-judgmental ear and a safe space where they could share. In addition, I volunteered in Cheeverstown working with people with intellectual disabilities, where I was engaging and encouraging the residents in social activities. I hold a BA ( Hons) in Counselling and Psychotherapy from Irish College of Humanities and Applied Science (ICHAS), a Diploma in Traumatology and PTSD, Certificate in Motivational Interviewing and have completed Workshops in Trauma informed Practice and Working with Sexual Trauma. Clinical Supervision: Clinical Supervision is considered an essential aspect of the helping professions with the aim being to review and reflect on clinical practice. It is a vehicle for providing skills and knowledge to supervisees and a framework for ensuring professional development in the clinical sector. The main goals of supervision for me are to impart knowledge, encourage enhancement of skills, instil preparation in supervisee’s for success and moving on to their next step of practice. I believe that as a Supervisor I have various crucial roles such as teaching, mentoring, evaluating and monitoring the supervisee. It also includes sharing of experiences, providing guidance and building professional development in supervisees. In Clinical Supervision I strive to provide a safe, supportive, and confidential space for supervisees to critically reflect on their professional practice with clients. I aim to aid this reflection by building on self-awareness within the supervisees and through following a framework of supervision. CBT: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is my core therapeutic approach which I hold my Master’s Degree in, however I also work from an integrative perspective to best suit the client’s individual needs. Other approaches adopted vary from Adlerian, Behavioural, Brief Therapy, Gestalt, Humanistic, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Person Centred, Psychodynamic, Rogerian and Solution Focused Brief Therapy

My Therapeutic Approach My personal and professional interest lie in brain health and individual meaning making processes. Therefore, my therapeutic approach is a neuroscience informed Humanistic – Existential approach. This is a relationship-based model that focuses on building awareness of all the parts of ourselves (including our brains) and the world around us. By understanding how our brains function and how our brain-body connection interacts with us and the world, we can optimise our mental health and shape our lives in ways that are meaningful to us. My Supervisory Approach I view supervision as an individualised learning process and integrate a developmental model of supervision with a reflective model of supervision to support this. This integrative model facilitates exploratory and reflective conversations with supervisees and is individually tailored to supervisees’ needs and practice, thus creating opportunities for supervisees to grow and flourish

I see therapy as providing a supportive space where clients can be listened to and given time to feel and process difficulties. It can also offer clients a concentrated time to develop an increased awareness of their opportunities and choices despite the inevitable fluctuating human experience of joy and adversity. Consequently this can enable clients to courageously take responsibility for their lived experiences and move forwards with integrity and a more wholehearted understanding of their potential. Additionally, this can cultivate trust in themselves to be able to manoeuvre through difficult experiences in the future.

I am a CBT Psychotherapist and Mindfulness trainer. My aim is to create a warm, non-judgemental, safe space to help you to overcome whatever you are struggling with in life. My aim is to support you to overcome these difficulties, and to live a life that truly matters to you with health, wellbeing and vibrancy. These life challenges can include worry, overthinking, anxiety, depression, panic, social anxiety, OCD, health anxiety, low self-esteem or stress. I have a special interest in ‘third wave’ CBT therapy which integrates Mindfulness, Self-Compassion and Acceptance-Based Approaches. I am a fully accredited EMDR therapist. I am also a neuro-affirming therapist. As an experienced social care worker, I have worked for many years with neurodivergent clients on the autism spectrum and with ADHD. As a CBT therapist, I work specifically within a CBT model of assessment and individualised, case-formulated treatment plans. I am also fully trained and qualified in Mindfulness-Based Approaches such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Compassion-Focused Therapy. I have a special interest in ‘third wave’ CBT therapy which integrates Mindfulness, Self-Compassion and Acceptance-Based Approaches. I find integrating CBT and Mindfulness to be extremely beneficial. You will see significant improvements in your overall wellbeing and resilience to your life challenges. These approaches will help you to rebuild your confidence and enthusiasm, and to live your life in a way that truly matters to you. I am also an autism-informed therapist who has worked for many years as a social care worker with a HSE funded organisation based in Cork and Kerry, alongside autistic adults supporting them on their own unique life journey. I specialize in ‘late-diagnosis’ autism, those who received their diagnosis in adulthood or who may feel that they have some autistic traits they would like to further explore. As an experienced social care worker, we will address your needs through an autism specific lens. Such as understanding how information processing, social imagination, social communication, executive function and sensory processing have influenced your life experience. I am also a fully trained and accredited EMDR therapist. EMDR is a type of therapy that helps people reprocess traumatic memories. EMDR is primarily used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but can also be used to treat other mental health difficulties, such as anxiety, depression, and phobias.

My approach is trauma-informed, and very much grounded in somatic awareness. I believe the more we can bring an inner coherence to our mind-emotions-body, the more we can digest the past that lives in us, and therefore align to the flow of the original developmental movement within us. As Eugene Gendlin said: "the way one wants to change isn't just from one category to another... One wants to change precisely into oneself, into more of oneself than one has been able to be so far." I also believe that a greater awareness of our ancestral and collective trauma can help us understand the water we swim in, and often struggle to name. As Thomas Hübl says “we have all been born into a collectively traumatized field and collective trauma needs collective healing.”

I use an integrative approach to therapy; which consists of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic therapy, and Person-centered therapy. One approach does not fit all, just as one size shoe does not fit all feet. This is one of my reasons for using an integrative approach. It would not be beneficial for me to stick to an approach that would not suit a client at that moment in time; I do not make my clients suit one approach. I truly believe using an integrative approach in therapy works best. Because you are unique.

CBT has been around for many years, as an evidence based practice. It helps people challenge their negative thoughts, that impact how they feel and behave. In CBT, you will work with your therapist to help you understand your challenges, recognize patterns of thinking and behaviours that can be contributing to your difficulties. You will then work together with the therapist to understand your thoughts, beliefs and emotions that may be contributing to the challenges. You will work towards understanding which of these are unhelpful and negative, so that you can begin to challenge them, and thereby minimize the effect they have on your mood, emotions and ability to live a full life. The next step is to identify behaviours based on these negative thoughts and what you can do to change them. This will hopefully help you to find ways to think and behave more positively, enjoying life more.
